FENG SHUI: Using Scents by Sharon Kasmira You needn’t be a student of aromatherapy to use scent or be affected by it in your interiors. We all know when a basement or attic smells musty and stale. We also can tell when an area smells fresh and clean. These opposites are examples of how scent influences how you feel and that also relates to the Chi or energy flow of feng shui. Unpleasant odors usually mean stagnent Chi while pleasant aromas indicate healthy Chi flow in an area. There are several levels of scent which affect you when using it to enhance feng shui. Just as you enjoy wearing your favorite fragrance using a preferred scent can aid in enhancing the Chi of a space. In addition, it raises your personal Chi which raises the energy in your surroundings. Pleasant aromas make people feel better in various ways. It has been proven that coffee or chocolate promote chemical responses in the brain. Scent can stimulate you or calm you and it can be used to cleanse old, unwanted residue energies to encourage fresh starts in any area of your life. This is especially effective when applied to a particular feng shui area. For instance, after a divorce you might use scent in the relationship/marriage area...or after loss of a job you can utilize scent to help transition toward a new career. Surrounding yourself with Chi enhancing scent can help ease depression, promote family harmony and stimulate creativity. The following is a list of suggested scents and their qualities for feng shui application: For romance --ylang ylang, jasmine, geranium, sandalwood To energize / stimulate --ginger, rosemary, lavender, peppermint, cinnamon, clary sage To refresh and uplift --sandalwood, lemon, rosemary, rosewood For warmth and security --ylang ylang, clary sage, tangerine, lavender To balance and restore --geranium, neroli, rose, lemon, cypress, vanilla (boosts spirits, joy, power) Relaxation and sleep --sandalwood, lavender, chamomile, geranium, winter green To cleanse and purify --tea tree, lavender, thyme, juniper, eucalyptus, rosemary, lime, pine Mental and memory stimulation --grapefruit, lemon grass, cardamom, camphor, patchouli, basil You can layer scent in various ways. We tend to layer scent on our bodies through bath and dressing rituals but think about doing the same in your interiors. There are a variety of commerically produced products to freshen and scent rooms. Environmental room sprays, candles, and incense are easily accessible. Try using your favorite perfume scent on bed linens or spritz some on a light bulb before turning it on to experience the improved ambiance and feel your mood change as well. Scent can be another way to leave your personal imprint on a space and raise the chi energy to further enhance your feng shui application. © Sharon Kasmira
